8 July 2014 (cloudy, windy, mild, some rain) 75 km

Woken this morning at 4am by a strong wind which had been waking me on and off throughout the night.  The awning on the unoccupied caravan opposite us was being blown around and making a loud flapping noise, which as per usual, Julia was oblivious to.  Dozed until 6.30am when Julia woke up and then we made breakfast and had a cup of tea.  I had a shower which was just the trick to fully wake me up and ready me for the road.
An old windmill
Due to the wind we were able to pack up a nice crisp tent for a change which is just one of those things that makes you feel good – like when all the towels dry on the line.  So off we cycled to Guderup where we had to take shelter from the rain so we ducked into the supermarket for the day’s supplies while that went over.
the centre of Nordborg - where is everybody?
Onwards to Nordborg which was like a ghost town.  Nobody about and loads of empty shops.  There was a castle there but even that had an air of neglect with the most plentiful visitors being the swallows that had taken up residence.
Julia now……Cycled over to Mjels Mark where we chatted
It's like a ghost town
to a lovely Danish woman while waiting for the ferry.  She would have been in her 70’s and went for a daily swim at the little beach where the ferry left.  This was a nice place to swim with lovely clear water and white sand.  If it hadn’t been only 16°C today, we would have joined her.  As it was, we waved to her as the ferry left on its fifteen minute journey across
two baby swallows waiting for Mum to come back with the goods
Als Fjord to Ballegard.
The roads on this part of the journey were nice and quiet and we spotted a wild deer in a wheat field.  The terrain today was undulating to hilly and the legs were feeling quite tired after yesterday’s hills.  Can only imagine what they’re going to feel like tomorrow
the castle at Nordborg
after today’s hills.
Cycled into Aabenraa which was a very industrial town with a massive power station at the entrance.  It too had a lot of empty shops and the whole bottom end of town was dead.  The recession must have had quite an impact in this area.  We had to shelter some more from the rain here so used this time to go and get a Danish SIM card for the dongle.  Got a week’s worth of internet for $37NZ.

Had a big hill to get out of Aabenraa and also a headwind to contend with so it was slow but steady progress this afternoon.  We were also on a main road for most of the afternoon so it was just a case of getting on with it rather than cruising along admiring the scenery.  Turned off the main road to get to our seaside camp and nearly had a baby deer run into me.  He quickly slammed on the brakes and ran back into the woods.

The camp tonight is immaculate and the kitchen and bathroom facilities are five star – and so they should be for $55 NZ for the two of us for one night!  We pitched the tent and made macaroni with mackerel in tomato sauce and salad followed by coffee and a choc chip muffin.  Wrote up the blog and met a lovely Danish woman in the kitchen and two German bikepackers who are heading home tomorrow after a ten day tour of Denmark.  Managed to delete our first effort at today’s blog in my efforts at trying to discreetly save our work without appearing rude to the people we were chatting to – next time I’m going for rude.  So once we finished chatting, we rewrote the blog while we had a cup of tea and the sun went down in a fiery ball of red.
