What is it about the camp sites we tend to frequent…?
At more than just a few, we are…..well….I am, either kept
awake until the early hours or woken during the early hours, by people making
noise. Last night, we pitched tent after disembarking the ferry….in a nice….but
quite pricey campsite…..8km’s outside Turku. Picked a spot that looked good and
the tent was up ….‘quick as mate’. Didn’t turn in until after 11pm, but it wasn’t
until 2am that the variety of noisy, ignorant bastards finally called it quits.
Julia however…….was as usual….oblivious..!

Way more camper vans than tents in campgrounds these days |
Awake this morning at
7.45am…..late indeed…..Showered and fed before posting the blog from a café on
site. By the time we were pedalling out the gates…..it was 10.30am.
Our destination….Turku….for a look around, then check with
Info Centre, regarding further things we may have missed…..before heading out
of town. Julia spent half an hour at Tourism, before more viewings and off into
the wild Blue Yonder to fill up with supplies.

Buildings in Turku, Finland |
That taken care of….we were looking for a likely eating
spot. Now anyone who has heard any of
our previous cycling tales will know that we have a habit of accidentally
choosing resting places of the previously departed to enjoy our meals [ ie.
Crematoriums and cemeterys]
For one reason it is always quiet.
They nearly always have trees……hence …shade….
And as Julia pointed out …..no smokers. I did correct her
there however….. by
pointing out …that’s not always the case…..at
crematoriums...!
As we cycled, looking for a spot….we noticed a game of
football, about to kick off.
Found a shady position
and sat and enjoyed a nice lunch and a very talented game of footy.
This was the way it should be played and watching one touch
played so well I hope some day we’ll see it done that way in N.Z. It was very
hot and it brought back memories of pre-season games played in the hot sun and
grass burns that stayed with you for weeks.
Left there about 3pm heading for a campsite the lady at the
Info office had given Julia.
On….and on…and on….we cycled. Part way along we struck our
first problem with the bikes, of the trip. One of my spokes had gone and my
wheel was moving slightly sideways and throwing my gears out of kilta. Damn…! Things had been going so well. We were now
out in the back of beyond…..it was late on Saturday….and no bike shop……..for
miles…..[or km’s anyway ]

Don't see signs like this in NZ |
Stopped and taped the broken spoke to a good one…..wheel and
gears still out of course…but no worse…..as yet. Sunday tomorrow…..and no one
will be open….so we’ve got to wing it and hope for a bit of luck….
Cycled for another 20 odd km’s before finally finding the
campsite. I might add that Julia hasn’t been very well today, clogged up with a
heavy cold and headache, so she did well to battle on.
The owner gave us a limited choice of sites…..pretty
lumpy….uneven…..mosquito ridden…..and guess what else……..friggin noisy….!
We’ve got a host of families here with mainly teenage
boys…..and as we all know….they can be loud..!
Bought a couple of cold…..low alcohol beers [didn’t have
anything else cold…in the fridge ]
When he showed me the low alcohol percentage, I asked if he
had a stronger beer…but no luck..
However…a guy who was in there at the same time…heard me… and
when we were checking out the tent site options….he gave me two of his
own…..stronger alcohol….beers…! How nice is that…!
Tent up….food consumed……Julia went for her shower
first….whilst I wrote this and we watched the sun dip over the horizon on our
first day in Finland……our final destination…!
