4 July 2014 (sunny and hot!) 61km

‘Moin’ everyone….!
Well that’s what we think they are saying. We used to say ‘Guten Morgen’ for good morning, but everyone says Moin’ now - we think it must be the New Zealand version of ‘Gidday Mate’.
Woke early this morning so that we could get up to the bathrooms and charge the camera and tablet. They have sockets in the bathrooms, so we get in before anyone else is moving. After showering, we sat in the beautiful morning sun, eating breakfast. There had been a haze over the Eider river, above which we were camped last night and it was a great way to wake up.
We’d had two lots of bikepackers staying at the camp last night and one couple we had struck up a conversation with, well……sort of, as they hardly spoke any English.  Found out they were cycling for nine days ……[just babies really ].  They were leaving just before us and a single guy had left a bit earlier.  Forecast yesterday was for 30 degrees and today it was right up there.
Stifling hot by 9.15am when we rode along to the ferry to cross to the shady side of the canal.  Aaah, what a difference and it was a real joy to ride alongside the canal on a flat, smooth cycle path just watching the boats go by and enjoying the fresh air.
Arrived at Rendsburg about 11.30am but had to cross the canal to get there.  We saw an escalator for pedestrians descending to the bowels of the earth and next door was a lift.  As we watched, the doors opened and a cyclist pedalled out.  So we cycled over to the lift and pressed the button to go down.  A short ride delivered us to a tunnel that went under the canal and we rode about 200 metres to the other side of the canal where we caught the elevator back up to ground level and into the centre of Rendsburg.
The further north we go, the more the buildings have a Scandinavian look to them.  We visited the bank to withdraw some more Euros and then a bakery to get some lunch.  Cycled through a park, of sorts.  More just some neglected ground and found a patch of grass in the shade where we laid out the groundsheet and ate our lunch and skyped the kids using the new dongle.  Worked a treat and we just wish we’d got one earlier.

Asked a couple of young girls, sisters, the way back to the canal and as luck would have it, they were cycling that way so told us to follow them.  That was easy and we were on our way again.  Instead of catching a ferry back across the other side, there was a platform suspended by a high bridge that took us and a bunch of other traffic across the canal.  All the bridges are very tall to allow for cruise ships to come up the canal.
And all the ferries by the way are free.
The track was good for about twenty minutes but then the surface was quite uneven and we were getting bounced around all over the show.  Took a punt and went via a parallel road which delivered us back to the canal about 1km further up.  Still, at least we’d missed out on about a km of that rough stuff.  Then we cycled standing up for about another km before the surface improved again and we could return to our seats.  Reached the ferry for Sehestedt and caught that across to the other side where we bought an ice-cream each and shared a coke and sat in the shade, trying to muster our energy for the last 20km ride to our chosen campground for the night.
30°C and nowhere to hide.
By this time it was stinking hot and becoming an effort to cycle. Still only about 13km’s to get to the next village of Eckernforde, which we thought would just be a pass through village.
It turned out to be a large town with beautiful beaches, including a nudist beach. The sand was that golden sand that squeaks under your feet. Couldn’t resist a swim as we were boiling hot, so into the not-so-warm water. But, it was exactly what the doctor ordered, cooled us right down.
Was not expecting a beach like this in Germany
A sunbathe on the beach was in order and as we lay I noticed the town was also a military base with three frigates moored and a submarine out in the harbour.  Julia didn’t notice as she fell asleep.  Beach was busy, but didn’t see anyone going in like Ju and I. Into town where we found a supermarket and stocked up for tea and breakfast, before heading to a campsite on the coast.
Eckenforde
Riding out I asked a couple of young guys the way, which they told us. We were virtually there, when one of the guys appeared on our shoulders to make sure we found the site, cause it could be a bit tricky. How nice is that …….!
Down a long gravel road for about 2 km in the relentless sun until we arrived at the camp. As we were checking in, the lady told us that Germany were playing France tonight. Perfect timing. Set up shop and went to the bar to watch, along with about 30 other German fans, who were rapt when they won 1-0.
Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely tea of curried herrings with bulghur salad, tomato and rice…..delicious….! Later, washed it down with a coffee and biscuits, before sleep, to dream of another nice day tomorrow, probably our last full day before Denmark.
